Christmas Countdown: Cadbury Canada’s Fun Bar Christmas wrapper!

CC_CadburyMerryChristmas_TitlePlate

Today it’s a fun one for Friday.   This wrapper comes from Canada and I’m pretty sure the 1980’s.  It’s a Cadbury “Fun Bar” which was their sub-brand of fundraising bars at the time.   This is one of my favorite Christmas-themed wrappers, and I’ll explain why after a bit.

Christmas Countdown: Topps’ 1969 Christmas Lineup!

CC_Topps1969Lineup_TitlePlateHere at my family’s place in Nebraska last night we had a nice helping of snow heaped upon us.  It put me in quite the Christmas mood, as did scooping my mother’s driveway and sidewalks this morning (I’m taking a break before I finish – whew!).   The snowfall stopped at 8am, but it had already left more than enough of a holiday-appropriate white covering over the town.  Quite nice.

With that positive holiday vibe fully enveloping me, I thought I’d go back to 1969 for today’s post on Topps’ Christmas holiday lineup from that year.

Christmas Countdown: Rowntree’s Christmas Dairy Box from the 1950’s

CC_Christmas Countdown Day OneHello, everyone!  I’d intended to start my Christmas Countdown on Monday when I’d first arrived back in Nebraska for the holidays, but I didn’t.  As things go, I’ve been entirely caught up with spending time with family.  Which I think is as it should be around the holidays.

Even so, I have some time set aside today, and I plan to post daily entries from here on through Christmas.  Also, in order to fit in the most Christmas goodness that I can, I’m going to put my regular Wacky Wednesdays posts on hold until after the holidays conclude.  Let’s get to it!

Once Again I’m Traveling! Stuff found at the D.C. Airport!

Hi, everyone! I’m traveling today for the holidays and am currently enjoying a 3 1/2 hour layover in Washington D.C.’s Reagan Airport.

So of course I did some candy hunting.

Milk Duds’ Exotic Brand Extensions – Saga of the Fruit-Flavored Duds and More!

CC_Exotic Duds TITLE PLATE

Yesterday I covered a pretty big swath of Milk Duds history through the lens of the vintage packaging in my collection.  Today, I’m going to look at a very specific niche of Milk Duds history – the exotic and little-known area of Milk Duds’ brand extensions.

These brand extensions include the oft-discussed, mythical “flavored Duds” of the 1970’s, plus two others that I’ve never  seen mentioned anywhere else before.  As this is one of my favorite sub-genres of candy collecting, I can’t wait to kick it off — so make the jump and join me for an awesome piece of Milk Duds history!

Milk Duds – 86 Years and 40 different packages!

CC_Milk Duds Title Plate

Milk Duds is a confectionery classic that was first sold in 1926 by the Holloway company of Chicago.  It’s a pretty simple bit of candy as so many classics are; a chewy nugget of caramel surrounded by a tasty chocolatey coating.   Along with Hot Tamales, Milk Duds have always been one of my favorite movie theater go-to candies.

Over the years, I’ve picked up quite a variety of Milk Duds packages that dot their history, though most of what I have is from the last forty years.   So today and tomorrow, I’m going to share what I have and walk you through the pieces of Milk Duds history that my collection can shine a light on.  Today is what we’ll call the standard Milk Duds chapter and tomorrow it’s going to be the exotic Milk Duds brand extensions.

Wacky Wednesdays – Milk Deads!

CC_WackyWednesdays_Milk Deads_Title PLate

I’ve been working on a big two-day Milk Duds posting which I’d intended to start yesterday, but it’s taken more work than expected so now it’ll start tomorrow.  Because of that Milk Duds theme, I decided to do something a bit unusual for today’s edition of Wacky Wednesdays.

By unusual, I mean that today I’m showcasing a Wacky Package design that has yet to actually go on-sale.  Previewed over at Beckett.com, this one comes from the upcoming Wacky Packages All New Series 10, shipping in March of 2013.  It’s Milk Deads!

My Quest to Find all of Hershey’s Current King Size Bars!

A few weeks ago, I set about to pick up examples of each of the current Hershey family “King Size” bars.  I figured it would be cool to have whatever few wrappers they produced with the unifying “King Size” wedge call-out graphic.   But what started out as a simple search would lead me to finding twenty-seven variety of King Size offerings across four different states!

On the road in Toledo – Boyd’s Retro Candy Store!

20121208-065902.jpg

The last couple of days I’ve been excitedly driving around the East Coast, partially in service of CollectingCandy.com (details to follow in the coming months). So when you are behind the wheel 12 hours in a day, I’ve found that it’s tough to get a post written up on candy.

Fortunately I returned home late last night, so today I’ve got a post about the great retro candy shop I visited along the way —  Boyd’s Retro Candy Store of Toledo, Ohio!
