When a Tennis Great Became a Chocolatey Treat – The Bjorn Borg candy bar!

When your focus is the history of candy packaging and marketing, it’s not easy to create posts that would be considered topical.  Yet I do often look for things that I can share that are connected to the news-of-the-day.  Sometimes I have to do a little bit of stretching to get there.  Today might be one of those cases.

I’ve been watching quite a lot of UK television lately; the BBC channels of course, but other UK stations as well.  It’s been fun getting up-to-speed on the Jubilee, the upcoming Olympics, Mrs Browns Boys, the Barclays banking scandal, and of course, Wimbeldon 2012.

The $100,000 Bar – A 100 Grand History.

100,000 bar trade ad – February 1967

[Note:  For an updated look back at Nestle’s 100 Grand history, check out “50 Years of Nestle’s 100 Grand Bar History!”]

According to my research, Nestle filed the trademark for the $100,000 bar way back in 1964, though some accounts report its nationwide launch as 1966.  Whatever the exact date of its introduction was, the bar has been around nearly half a century, and that’s pretty impressive.

CollectingCandy.com’s 100,000th View!

Earlier this week, more specifically at 11am on Monday, CollectingCandy.com received its 100,000th page view.  Hooray!

CollectingCandy.com officially launched on February 6th with our Big League Chew Retrospective.   Since then, it’s been 120 posts and just under five months to hit that 100,000th page view.  That many page views may not a big deal in the grand scheme of the interwebs, but we’re pretty excited about it here.

When I conceived CollectingCandy.com, I knew the kind of coverage I wanted to create on this material even though I was skeptical that people would come to or visit the site on a regular basis.  But the response thus far has been overwhelmingly positive, and it’s because of the comments and e-mails that I’ve been encouraged to tread forward.

It’s been a lot of work and a lot of fun, and I wanted to thank everyone for dropping by and showing your support!

Wacky Wednesdays – Nothing! – The Wacky Package that Almost Wasn’t.

Today’s edition of Wacky Wednesdays is a bit of a departure from the previous entries, as I was personally involved in shaping the final look of this sticker.   From 2012’s Wacky Packages Old School Series 3 is a sticker I call “Nothing”, a parody of Nestle’s $100,000 bar.

A Walk Through Whoppers Packaging History!

Whoppers malted milk balls – they’re a candy classic that’s been around in one form or another since 1939.

Because they’ve been around so long, they’re a daunting topic to tackle – and the task to cover them proved to be even more challenging and time-consuming than I expected.   I spent several nights going over packaging, thinking I was done, only to realize that I’d forgotten a piece.   Then I remembered the volumes of trade magazines I had to search through to ensure I wasn’t missing any cool ads or info.

Finally, I have it all here – so without further delay, let’s get to this Whopper.

Out Now – Nestle Crunch Girl Scout Cookie Candy Bars!

Though I spend the bulk of my time researching and hunting down candy packaging from the past, I still do like to pick up contemporary releases, especially new or odd things.   While finding the vintage stuff is hard, it might surprise you to learn that sometimes it can be pretty difficult to track down new stuff, too.

Feeling the Fahrenheit and the Mr. Freeze Flavor Line-Up From 1970.

It’s been brutally hot here on the East Coast the last couple of days, so I thought I’d share this icy-cool trade ad from 1970, featuring the full flavor line-up for Mr. Freeze at the time.

These all sound awfully good to me right now.

A Quick Taste of Counter-Culture Candy — Or When Social Movements Become Tasty Treats!

I wanted to share something quick and fun today, so I came up with two pieces that reflect the counter-culture movement of the 60’s and 70’s, albeit in a small way.

Hippies – what can I say?  I grew up with them in the 70’s, and I kinda dig ’em.

Mighty Malts – A 1970’s Malted Milk Ball Superhero and a Confectionery Classic!

Most of you have probably never heard of Mighty Malt, and might not even be familiar with the candy he briefly reigned as the mascot for: Mighty Malts malted milk balls.   While Mighty Malt himself has long-since faded into retirement, Mighty Malts are still available on candy shelves today.
