A Nickelodeon Green Slime candy bar? Not quite – but pretty close!

To my knowledge, Nickelodeon never licensed its Green Slime property to the confectionery business.  But wouldn’t it have been a great idea if they did?

Even though Nickelodeon never produced an official Green Slime bar, the folks at Australia/New Zealand’s Cadbury division came up with something pretty darned close.  And I’ll be revealing that bar wrapper in just a minute.

Subway Spotted – The new Mike & Ike campaign!

I spotted this cool bit of subway advertising on New York City’s N-line heading into Times Square this weekend.  I first wrote about this year’s big Mike and Ike campaign back on March 18th; When Mikes and Ikes get competitive – A Fun New Just Born promotion, and this is a pretty cool part of that.

I’m not used to seeing subway ads for candy,  so this really jumped out at me.   The idea here is that Ike, now distanced from Mike, has produced this piece of funky-cool art.  I can dig it.

I wondered if this campaign would catch on when I first became aware of it.  If it’s any indication, the person I was hanging with at the time stated, after looking at the poster, “I really want some Mike and Ikes now.”   Guess it’s working…

See ya next time!

Nik-L-Nip and other Wondrous & Weird Waxy Candy!

Ah… wax candy.  As a kid, I never really understood the appeal, and frankly I was a bit afraid of the syrupy contents of some of these.  But my friends and classmates seemed to enjoy them, and as I’ve found over the years, they were not alone.   Things like wax lips and Nik-L-Nips are still around today, and still evoke powerful memories for those that had them in their youths.

For today’s piece, I’m going to share a series of trade ads and clippings from the early 70’s era.  I don’t have much in the way of packaging for any of these wax treats.  It seems that, for the most part, the packaging was an afterthought where this category of confection was concerned, and it rarely stood out by itself.  It was the syrup-filled contents that were the stars of the show.  That was certainly the case in the early 1970’s.

Spotted this week: Unreal’s Organic Candy Bars!!

Here at CollectingCandy.com, we celebrate candy packaging, candy marketing, and the people behind it all.  Oftentimes that takes us down rarely-seen or unusual historical paths, and that’s where a lot of fun can be found.  But sometimes we get to look at something unusual that’s in stores right now.  Such is the case with Unreal, a line of organic candy bars that recently came to market.

Topps’ Answer to Fun Dip: 1980’s Dip-It Candy!

As I chronicled earlier this year, Sunline introduced Fun Dip to the world in 1973.  In those first few years, Fun Dip became a huge hit in the candy world, and of course its still around today.

When something innovative like Fun Dip catches on in the candy biz, it’s inevitable that others will try to “get in on the fun”, so to speak.   Such was the case that a few years after Fun Dip’s introduction, Topps rolled out a similar product called Dip-It Candy.

Donruss’ Bitty Bombs and Bitty Bites!

All the way back in the 1970’s, if a new hot cinnamon candy came out, I was sure to sample it.  While Just Born’s Hot Tamales remain my all-time favorite, Donruss’ Bitty Bombs were one of those 1970’s offerings that I remembered fondly through the decades.

Conversely, Bitty Bombs’ fruit-flavored spin-off product Bitty Bites is one I don’t ever remember seeing and would only discover recently as a collector.

Celebrating America’s Independence Day with Nestle’s Flags of the American Revolution!

Though we Americans often refer to today as “The Fourth of July”, I like to refer to today by its more traditional name.  With that said — Happy Independence Day to all of my readers here in the United States.

Before I get to my candy talk today, I would like to point readers to something non-candy-related, but awfully fun – my fireworks packaging scrapbook scans.  If you want to see a bunch of 1980’s vintage-era fireworks – you can check them out by clicking here.

Independence Day was a huge milestone during the American Revolution, one where we declared our independence from Great Britain.  I’ve opted to celebrate today by showcasing a series of chocolate bar wrappers that were released by Nestle in 1977, in the wake of our Bicentennial the year before.  They were a series of wrappers featuring “Flags of the American Revolution” and I’ve gotta say, I think they’re pretty awesome.

Celebrating World UFO Day – CollectingCandy-style!

Breaker Confections – Sunmark – U.F.O. Candy container – 1978

This week is a week of celebrations, and one in which I’ve oddly been a day late to acknowledge them.   Yesterday was World U.F.O. Day, a day where people are encouraged to search the skies for unidentified flying objects.  So today will be the day we celebrate  with UFO-related candy packaging.

Celebrating Canada Day with Smarties and Necco Canada Mints!

Canada Day was yesterday, though most Canadians have the day off of work today due to the holiday, so this is for my Canadian friends on their extra day-off – I hope you’re having a great one!   While I’m getting to this a day late, I still wanted to acknowledge the day with a bit of Canada-themed candy packaging.

Japan’s Mini-Pez!!

I haven’t devoted much effort to documenting the PEZ part of the collectible candy world.  It’s not that I don’t like PEZ – I love PEZ dispensers.  It’s just that collecting PEZ dispensers is a topic that has been well-documented and well-covered by other folks already.  There are a handful of quality books on PEZ, as well as numerous websites devoted to them, so if you’re at all curious about their history, you should check them out.

In spite of that wealth of information out there, I thought I’d devote today’s post to one of the lesser-known parts of PEZ – the Japan mini-PEZ releases of the mid-2000’s.   I won’t delve too much into the details of the releases – this is more of just me tipping the hat to something I like.
