Here at CollectingCandy.com, we celebrate candy packaging, candy marketing, and the people behind it all. Oftentimes that takes us down rarely-seen or unusual historical paths, and that’s where a lot of fun can be found. But sometimes we get to look at something unusual that’s in stores right now. Such is the case with Unreal, a line of organic candy bars that recently came to market.
This isn’t a candy review site, so I won’t get into the details of the actual product too much. Needless to say, I sampled Unreal’s organic offerings and I quite liked them. So yes, I bought them for the wrappers, but ended up happily eating the goodies, too.
My friend Cybele over at CandyBlog writes up detailed reviews of the whole Unreal line, so if you’re curious about the contents, you can read more about them over there.
Marketing “organic” to the typical candy bar consumer is not an easy thing to do, nor is marketing candy bars to the organic crowd, but I do think it could work, and these folks seem to have taken the right tack to do so. The packaging is unified, striking, and different, allowing it to stand-out in a pretty competitive marketplace. The Unreal website also doesn’t shy away from these bars still being candy – they’re not selling this as health food – they’re purposely placing these where candy bars live.
The wrappers are black, featuring the Unreal logo in colored foil, each bar receiving a number and description, rather than a name. To me it’s sort of a cool futuristic sci-fi look, and I’ll be curious to see if it grabs the typical consumer’s attention. For now I just want to show off these striking wrappers.
For now it appears that they’ve got those five different offerings, each one an organic alternative to a candy bar aisle mainstay. I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for new additions to the line-up.
And that’s everything on Unreal’s Organic candy bar line-up. See you next time!
I have not seen these yet here in SoCal. Very nice packaging. The ingredients look good also.
The packaging makes me think of Tron.
Well it IS the 30th Anniversary of the original release date of Tron today, so…
Tried them last night, and they are DE-licious! Kind of like I remember candy tasting before they ruined it by making it as cheaply as possible.
