Nik-L-Nip and other Wondrous & Weird Waxy Candy!

Posted on July 8, 2012 by Jason Liebig

Ah… wax candy.  As a kid, I never really understood the appeal, and frankly I was a bit afraid of the syrupy contents of some of these.  But my friends and classmates seemed to enjoy them, and as I’ve found … Continue reading →

Who remembers the Bonkers! candy “Bonkmobile”? Who remembers the Bonkers! candy “Bonkmobile”?

It was 1983, an age before immersive experiences and consumer activations were all the rage, and Lifesavers Inc. set out to promote their new fruit chew with something totally radical: a mobile fruit-themed fun house where kids would crawl over, through and around gargantuan faux fruit constructs. Upon completion of their journey, the visiting kids would be rewarded with free packs of Bonkers!

The Bonkmobile would travel across the country over the next two years, setting up in fairgrounds and shopping mall parking lots, delighting children with vibrant candy chews before apparently being decommissioned in late 1985.

Bonkers! candies themselves, in spite of these robust creative promotional efforts, would soon change ownership before eventually being discontinued themselves in the 1990s.

Bonkers! candy is only a vibrant nostalgic memory now but the legacy of its creative marketing and promotional efforts stands as worthy of remembrance as the candy itself.

Did anyone out there visit the Bonkmobile?
