Brach’s Boxes of the 1960’s!

CC_Brachs Boxes TITLE PLATE

Recently I posted about my success in locating a pair of 1960’s Breaker Confections boxes I’d long been searching for.  At the same time I found those I also acquired two 1960’s Brach’s candy boxes, adding to the two I’d already had in my collection.  So with four different 1960’s Brach’s boxes in hand, it seemed like a great time to share.

A Quick Trip to Trader Joe’s Colorful Candy Isle!

CC_Trader Joe's Candy TITLE PLATE

I am not a regular Trader Joe’s customer so it’s quite an adventure and a treat when I get to visit one of their stores.  My lack of regular trips should not reflect any shortage of affection I have for the place – as it has everything to do with the simple fact that I don’t have a location conveniently near me.  And I like my grocery shopping to be convenient.

Beyond the quality of their actual products I’ve always admired so much of Trader Joe’s in-house brand packaging.  They often come up with some outstanding stuff.

So after a recent trip to a digital transfer studio in Brooklyn (to get six 1970’s candy commercial film reels transferred – to be premiered later on this summer) I decided to make a detour to my closest Trader Joe’s location in order to sample some of their neat confectionery offerings.

Sour Power-Up with Fleer Puckers!

CC_Fleer Puckers TITLE PLATE

Last year I posted about a piece I was delighted to discover from 1970’s Fleer called Big Pucker.  Some months later I would find a mention of its predecessor Little Puckers in an old trade magazine.   But I didn’t know what Little Puckers looked like until recently when an intact example of them surfaced.  So today I’d like to share Fleer’s confectionery “Sour Power” duo; Little Puckers and Big Pucker!

Unreal Organic Candy – Unjunked and Now Updated!

CC_Unreal Update TITLE PLATE

About a year ago, I covered my first encounter with the Unreal candy brand, a line of organic candy bar offerings meant to compete with and offer a healthier alternative to the candy isle standards.

Back then I noted how striking Unreal’s packaging was and pondered whether its unique and unusual look would grab the attention of a typical consumer.   It’s a year later and the Unreal brand is still around but with new-look packaging, still featuring a strong design but one that consumers might find a little easier to embrace.

Breaker Confections’ 5-Cent Window Boxes from 1963!!

CC_Breakers 5-cent boxes TITLE PLATEBreaker Confections is a name that you might not know, although you’ll certainly recognize some of their more successful creations like Bottle Caps, Tart N Tinys and Everlasting Gobstoppers.   The company name was retired when it became a part of the Willy Wonka Brands group in the early 1980’s.  But long before they were developing classic Wonka treats, Breaker Confections were known for their own branded goodies.  Today I’ll be showcasing a few of their 5-cent boxed offerings from the 1960’s that have not likely been seen in nearly half-a-century.

A Fruity Forgotten One from the 1990’s – Frutables Juice Gum!

CC_Frutables - TITLE PLATE

As I’ll often find when researching vintage confectionery, “Googling it” regularly turns up nothing – zip, zilch, and nada.  The history of candy packaging, especially for short-lived products, is seemingly lost and the internet can provide little help.  So when setting out to write about a product like the one today, I am left with whatever can be turned up within the scattered collection of materials I’ve acquired over the years.  It’s old-fashioned primary research (and it’s actually quite a lot of fun).

Such was the case the Warner-Lambert’s Frutables Juice Gum.

Man of Steel, the latest cinematic interpretation of DC Comics’ Superman premiered at #1 in theaters over this past weekend.  It made me realize this would be a great time to do a Superman-related post.  So today I’d like to talk about a pair of promotions Nestle did around the time of the first Christopher Reeve Superman film.
