The characters from Super Mario Brothers have received a number of licensed confectionery treatments over the years. I had the pleasure of covering one of the earliest back in May when I discussed Candy USA’s Super Mario Bros. bar from 1989. Today I’m going to take a look at the rarely-seen follow-up to that first effort with a trio of chocolate bars licensed from Super Mario Bros. 3!
A Trio of Super Mario Bros 3 Chocolate Bars from 1990!
A Forgotten Wonka Treat – Tangy Bloops!
It’s been a couple of weeks since I last pulled something from the 1970’s archives to share, so today I’m presenting a Wonka treat you’ve likely never seen before: Tangy Bloops Super Sour Candy!
Sugarpova! And the wild U.S. Open marketing stunt that almost was.
Maria Sharapova is currently one of the most successful and popular tennis players in the world and she’s used that on-court success to branch out into other areas — one of which being confection with her Sugarpova candy brand. Today I’d like to cover the Sugarpova brand but I’d also like to highlight one of the greatest candy-marketing stunts that almost was.
Google’s Android Teams-Up with Kit Kat for a Tasty Marketing Tie-In!
Yesterday, Google announced that the next version of their Android mobile operating system will be named KitKat! With previous versions of their OS sporting nicknames like Cupcake, Jellybean and Ice Cream Sandwich, it should come as no surprise that they finally made their way over to a classic branded confection. Even so, I see this as a brilliantly entertaining and unexpected marketing move – and one that will be quite a bit of fun to collect!
7-Eleven’s Exclusive New Laffy Taffy Flavor!
Sometimes a store exclusive candy offering is easy to spot – as it will be talked about in the trade press or have a large graphic on the package indicating it as special. But with this new release of Strawberry-Banana Laffy Taffy, I very nearly missed it completely. And if I could so easily overlook it, I figured it might be a good idea to put out the word about the release here – so others could seek it out to sample.
Mysterious Candy Maker from Checkerboard Square – Found!
There are countless mysteries and forgotten favorites in the world of candy and I’ve had the pleasure of documenting many of them right here on this site. It’s always a thrill to discover these lost treats and fun to shine a light on them for all to see – it’s also a big part of why I enjoy documenting the confectionery segment of our shared pop-cultural past. That makes today a particularly good one as I’ll be looking at a delightful pair of wrappers you won’t find anywhere else from the early 1970’s and Ralston-Purina’s previously unknown Candy Maker brand.
Bubblicious Bubblegum Packs from Japan!
On February 7th of 2012 (only the second day of publication for this site) I wrote a short post about Bubblicious gum that mentioned my colorful collection of nine different Japanese Bubblicious packs.
Since then my collection has nearly doubled in size to sixteen different packs and that seemed like a nice number of new pieces to share.
A Fun One For Friday – Barratt’s A-Team Bubblegum from the UK!
Wanted to post up a fun pop-culture piece for today and I think I’ve got the perfect one. Back in 1983 the UK’s Barratt company released “The A-Team Super Stringy Bubble Gum” in a grape flavor.
Willy Wonka’s Squids – A Forgotten 80’s Gummy!
Here at CollectingCandy.com I tend to throw around the adjectives “lost” and “forgotten” from time-to-time and I don’t think I’m being overly dramatic when I do.
In the realm of vintage candy countless products have come and gone, seemingly in the span of a baseball season or a grade school semester. So even if you sampled one of these brief releases you might not remember it today. Such was the case with me and my personal recollections of Willy Wonka’s Squids.
70’s Flashback with Licorice Snaps!
During a recent candy hunt to a dollar store, I came across a box for “Original Snaps”, a classic treat from the American Licorice Company. I realized that this was the same company that had been making Snaps for decades and I thought a post that looked back at vintage box from my collection would be fun.
