Why Saving Unopened Candy Can Be a Very Bad Idea. Presented in Pictures!

CC_Unopened candy TITLE PLATE

As a candy collector, I’m often asked whether I save actual edible candy or just the packaging.  My answer usually goes that I’m technically a candy packaging collector, so I always try to separate a wrapper or box from the confection it contains.  Excepting in rare cases, I almost never save the contents.

I think the only way to be sure of preservation is to operate with a never-save-the-candy rule.  I’ve even cracked open seemingly-stable, decades-old candy packages that other folks have lovingly saved unopened.   That has led to laments by some at my unsealing what you might call a “mint in package” candy bar or pack of bubblegum.  And while I do understand the sadness at seeing something whole made less-so, my goal is always long-term preservation.

With today’s post, I hope to make a compelling (and pretty gross) case as to why saving unopened candy can be a very bad idea.

McCormick’s World of Flavors – Featuring a Red Velvet Cake Bar!

CC_McCormick TTITLE PLATE

McCormick is a brand name those of us in the United States will immediately recognize for their association with the spice isle in most grocery stores.  But recently McCormick has dipped its toes into the packaged confectionery pool with a series of bars sold only at their flagship “World of Flavors” store in Baltimore, Maryland.

It’s November 1st and Halloween 2013 Gives Way to the Next Holiday!

CC_2013 is in the past

Yesterday we celebrated Halloween 2013 and today it becomes yet another day from our past, relegated to what one hopes is fond memory.  Here on this site, we celebrated the lead-up to the spooky holiday all month long by looking at Halloween candy both old and new.  Seemingly in the blink of an eye, even those new items will soon be considered vintage.

CC_HersheyHalloweenTombstoneWrappers_TITLE PLATEHappy Halloween everyone!

Yep, it’s October 31st and the finale of our second annual participation in the Countdown to Halloween.  It’s been quite a fun month, where we posted 27 new entries dedicated to Halloween candy packaging and marketing.  [Note: During the countdown month we also hit a big milestone with CollectingCandy.com’s 400th post overall.]

For the final entry in our month-long countdown, we’re going to look at a variety of Halloween packaging from Hershey, starting with what I’m calling their “Humorous Tombstone” collection.

New for 2013: Starburst Candy Corn and Brach’s New Look! Plus a Big Dose of Candy Corn History!

CC_CandyCornDay_TITLE PLATEb

October 30th is National Candy Corn Day — well, at least that’s what Alton Brown told me when I saw him on the Food Network last week.  Alton’s alert prompted me to do a little Google search to read up on the holiday and it’s not nationally recognized just yet.  So while it’s not an officially sanctioned holiday, it is a great way to celebrate one of the classic seasonal offerings on the day before everyone goes out to Trick-or-Treat.

In the spirit of Candy Corn Day I’ll be showcasing at few new products as well as looking back at a number of awesome vintage candy corn pieces from Halloweens past.

A Glimpse into Halloween Candy Retail of 1953!

CC_Halloween 1953 TITLE PLATEb

During last year’s CountdownToHalloween I posted a series of images of Halloween retail store displays from 1969.  I didn’t expect that post to generate as much positive buzz as it did, but that response reinforced to me just how unusual it is to find images of our retail past.  I wanted to bring something similar to the Countdown this year and after a lot of digging through my archives, I found a super photo of a grocery store’s checkout isles taken during the 1953 Halloween season.

Vintage Halloween Candy Newspaper Ad Circulars from the 80’s and 90’s!

CC_Halloween Circulars TITLE PLATEbIt might be surprising to learn that, outside of the packaging itself, one of the best places to learn about historical confectionery products and marketing is through the promotional circulars published in weekend newspapers.  Today, I’m going to take a look at a handful of Halloween candy circulars from the 1980’s and early 1990’s.
