Circa 1962, this is a Charl-Mont branded box for a Circa 1962, this is a Charl-Mont branded box for a “homestyle candies” assortment, produced and customized for the legendary Gimbels department store.

This piece from my archives represents two iconic brands that have long since passed into history.

Gimbels is certainly the most well-known as during the 20th century it represented a retail store that was an arch-rival to Macy’s and today remains embedded within our collective pop culture.

Most recently, Gimbels was the store where Buddy the elf ended up working at, in the movie “Elf”. But most famously, it remains represented as Macy’s principal rival in the iconic Christmas movie classic “Miracle on 34th Street”.

After years of financial challenges, Gimbels eventually shuttered operations in 1986 to remain only a memory.

The story of Charl-Mont is less clear. My research has revealed that they appeared to serve as a kind of B2B (business -to-business ) food service provider. Meaning they would contract out to an organization or another company and set up a Charl-Mont branded public-facing restaurant within it, as they did for Gimbels. They would do the same for other retailers around the country as well as operating restaurants not directly tied to some partner or parent retailer.

While I haven’t assembled a complete story on both of these companies, I’m grateful to have this delightful little artifact that shows how these two, once-successful brands were connected. 🙂
