Posted on June 12, 2012 by Jason Liebig

I somehow missed that yesterday was the 30th Anniversary of the original release of E.T. The Extra Terrestrial – a classic film that contains a classic candy tie-in.  That tie-in being Reese’s Pieces.  A day late it might be, but … Continue reading →

Here’s one I’ll bet you’ve never heard! Did you Here’s one I’ll bet you’ve never heard!

Did you know that M&M’s chocolate candies might have been re-branded as “M&M’s Chocolate Bombs” after WW2?!

Yesterday was day two of my guest stint for “American Snack History Week” with Julie Mason on her SiriusXM show!

Here’s the link to the segment (posting clickable link in my story):

Within that, we discuss some of the early history of M&M’s candy - a topic which you’d think would be pretty settled at this point. But this is me, and there’s always a deeper history to uncover!

Not only do I debunk an oft-repeated myth of their origins, I bring up evidence I uncovered that they might have once had a significant brand name change, albeit a brief one.

Attached is the 1944 ad showcasing the branding change. Just three years later, Topps would launch their mega-hit bubblegum brand, Bazooka. So putting this change into that perspective, it’s not at all surprising that the M&M’s company (which wouldn’t become a part of Mars Inc. until the 1960s) would consider this more exciting war-themed name as well.

What do my branding people think of this one? Is your mind blown? What would the M&M’s brand be today if it were “M&M’s Chocolate Bombs”?
