Hot Week: PEZ Hot Cinnamon Candy from the 1960’s!

Posted on September 24, 2013 by Jason Liebig

Our first Cinnamon Hot Week posting is a wild one as it features a cinnamon hot flavor of a candy I never would have expected and had never heard of until recently:  Hot Cinnamon Pez!

44 years apart between then and now… This is a ph 44 years apart between then and now…

This is a photo of an original, first edition Grape and Strawberry Nerds Candy box (from 1982/83) stacked on top of a Grape and Strawberry Nerds box that I bought this week (2026).

Sharing for the obvious novelty that the UPC code hasn’t changed one wit in all those decades. The candy hasn’t changed too much either, although the Nerds pieces have gotten a little bigger, as has the brand.

When Nerds launched nationwide in 1983 they were a bonafide candy aisle hit out of the gate, creating an unprecedented wave of licensing opportunities for the Nerds characters. It was a level of licensing which really hadn’t been seen in candy before, but would soon be replicated and surpassed by the emerging M&M‘s mascots.

The late great Paul Jankowski is the illustrator/artist credited with creating the Nerds mascot design and even the name itself might have been inspired by one of Paul’s kids. The concept of the candy was at least partially ideated by Sunline/Breaker employees Bob Anderson and Bob Boutin, with the revolutionary box design coming from the mind of packaging engineer/designer Herb Lambert of the Horner-Waldorf box company, who built upon his previous innovations in cigarette boxes for the two-flavor chamber with re-close-able sliders.

Suffice it to say, Nerds stands as one of the most successful candy launches of all-time, and certainly of the 1980s.

And in 2020 the Nerds brand would find unprecedented new heights with the introduction of Nerds Gummy Clusters (with Sean Oomens credited for their conception). Taking the collective nerds brand from $50 million a year to nearly $1 billion today.

44 years from then to now and it seems to me that beyond a UPC that hasn’t changed, neither has the magic that is always in effect whenever Nerds candies are around.
