As a candy collector, Halloween stands head-and-shoulders above all others, because so much of it is about candy. Not only that, most companies release special Halloween-themed packaging for their products that tend to be pretty cool. In short, Halloween is an exciting time for collecting candy.
I plan to devote the entire month of October posts to the topic of collecting Halloween candy, and to Halloween. Not sure if I can pull it off, but that’s the goal. Today will be a bit of a preview of that Halloween-dedicated goodness.
Now that the back-to-school sections are being dismantled, it’s already time for Halloween product to start getting stocked. Today, I’d like to cover my first Halloween candy hunting outing of 2012 – at Target.
I’ve found that Target is one of the better spots to track down a superior variety of the special Halloween stuff. Oftentimes, they’ll stock specialty Halloween items that you can’t find anywhere else. It might sound a bit ridiculous, but much of this great stuff is already sold-out by mid-October. So if you’re a collector, you have to get into the stores early before it can all disappear.
Back in 2008, my girlfriend and I went a bit Target-Halloween crazy, and picked up all of this wild stuff:
I’d read online that Targets were scheduled to begin stocking their Halloween goodies this week, so on Sunday I made the trip.
While there was still quite a bit of space dedicated to leftover back-to-school materials, several Halloween product isles had been built-up (and actually already picked through.) [Apologies for a few of the blurry photos – I was taking snapshots with my phone and should have been more vigilant – it was a bit of a madhouse.]
Here’s what I saw:
Last, but not least – I found that Nabisco’s Oreo Halloween edition packaging, after remaining the same the last few years, has received a fun redesign. Here it is:
And that’s all of the pics I have to share. I was hoping to find the new candy corn Oreo cookies, as well as some of the other new Halloween offerings, but I suspect I’m going to have to make a second trip back soon.
And that’s all for today’s post. See you next time!
I’ve hit all 3 Targets in my vicinity and so far none of them are 100% stocked for Halloween yet…but they’re getting there!
If you’re planning on posting all thru October, check out countdowntohalloween.com and join the rest of the Halloween obsessed as we also post throughout the month. And it’s a great way to get some new visitors to your site.
Nestle in Canada has renamed some of their treats for Halloween: Smarties become “Scaries”, available only in orange and black; Aero is now “scAero” (stylized as such, though no deviation from flavour exists); Coffee Crisp is now, appropriately, “Coffin Crisp”, and the KitKat packaging features a black cat on the wrapper.
Andrew, yes those are awesome! I heard about them a few weeks ago and a friend sent me the assortment. I’ll be covering them, and a whole lot more, in October. 🙂
In the dairy section of my local Ultra store here on Chicago’s south side, I found a bottle of Halloween Edition Nestle Nesquik that features the bunny wrapped up in mummy straps.
And as if that wasn’t cool enough… he glows in the dark!
Man, *I* want a Coffin Crisp. I had a co-worker whose family lived in Canada and she used to bring me back cases of Coffee Crisp to me here in Missouri. I love Halloween and I love Coffee Crisps. A perfect combination!
Hey, I just noticed that not only is the Oreo package Halloween, but the actual cookies are designed with a witch on a broom–cool!
