Superbowl 2015 and the Collation Conundrum! (plus a little NFL Snickers history)

CC_Superbowl 2015 TITLE PLATE

Once again it’s Super Bowl Sunday and for the third year in a row I’ll be featuring Snickers NFL Minis and their team wrappers!  Make the jump to check them out.

First encountering the Snickers NFL Minis in the fall of 2012, I was able to put together a set of team wrappers but it took me two large packs to do so.  The following year, Snickers Peanut Butter Squared Minis were added to the mix, and luckily I was able to get a full team set out of each package I purchased.

For today’s post, I have not been so lucky.  The team wrapper collation within the two packages of 2014 NFL Minis that I purchased didn’t provide a complete set of teams in either the standard or Peanut Butter Snickers variety.  So, what I’ll be sharing today will be the incomplete sets I did put together.

This all reminds me a bit of the trading card collecting of my youth.  In that hobby, “collation” is a big term – but not so much in the world of candy.  In fact, I suspect I’m one of the few people who might ever have an issue with “Snickers Minis wrapper collation”.

Before we get to this years NFL Minis wrappers, I want to share a historical perspective on NFL-related Snickers Minis.  Late last year, I acquired a group of photos from a former Mars employee that revealed the fact that NFL Snickers Miniature bars had been around a lot longer than I thought.

While I had imagined they were a brand new concept for 2012, my data shows that NFL Snickers Miniatures were actually produced and sold back in 2002.  Here’s a photo of them from that 2002 release:

Beyond that 2002 photo, I have an even earlier shot which appears to be a concept image for an NFL Snickers miniature product which dates back to 1996.  These may have been a test-market release or may have simply been unproduced mock-ups – either way, they look great:

Anyone out there remember these NFL Snickers Miniatures from 2002 or even earlier?  If you do, I’d love to hear about it.

Getting back to this years release, the Snickers Minis have undergone only minor design changes.  The most dramatic change across the board is an edge of reflective foil present on the edges of each wrapper.  Also for the 2014 edition, the Miami Dolphins wrapper reflects that team’s new helmet deco.  Here’s a look at the evolution of the modern Snickers NFL Minis wrappers so far:

So there you can see how the wrappers have changed and evolved.

As I mentioned at the top of today’s post, I don’t have complete sets of wrappers to share today, as the collation was not even close to providing a complete set of teams.  With the standard Snickers Minis, I only found 15 of the 32 teams represented in my 19 oz package.  That’s less than half and it was disappointing, though I did end up with quite a few Buffalo Bills wrappers.

Lots and lots of Buffalo

Another change with this years packaging was a move to a more standard style of large bag package, as opposed to the standing packaging style from the last couple of years.   Here are this years big bags:

Now here are the standard wrappers (missing wrappers are still shown but ghosted using last years edition):

And now here are the PB Squared NFL Minis.  The collation on these was much better:

So that’s all of them.   Because of my collation conundrum I’m still missing quite a few team wrappers so I’ll be going online this week to see if I can order another package of each.   With any luck, a second set of NFL Minis packages will make for a complete set of team wrappers.

Hope everyone is having a great night, whether you’re watching the game or not.   I’ll see you next time!
