It’s hard to believe it’s already August – the summer is really flying along.\u00a0 Yes, it’s August 1st and it’s also Wednesday, so we get to bring you another edition of Wacky Wednesdays!<\/p>\n

Today’s subject comes from Wacky Packages Old School Series 3 (released earlier this year) and its parody of the 1970’s classic Pop Rocks.\u00a0 It’s Pop Recks!<\/p>\n

Though Pop Rocks are still around, when they were first introduced in the mid-1970’s, they were a cultural phenomenon.\u00a0 So it’s great that after all these years, Pop Rocks finally received the Wacky Packages treatment.\u00a0 [Note: For those not aware, Wacky Packages Old School is a new series that parodies vintage products in their vintage packaging.]<\/p>\n

Here’s a look at the sticker:<\/p>\n

Wacky Packages Old School 3 – Pop Recks – 2012<\/p><\/div>\n

The gag of the sticker plays to the obvious here, that Pop Rocks are the “exploding candy”.\u00a0 Painted by Dave Gross, it’s another fun one, with the parody packaging true to the iconic original and the inclusion a Wacky character interacting with the product.<\/p>\n

Here’s a matching example of 1970’s Pop Rocks packaging:<\/p>\n

Pop Rocks – Cherry Flavor 20-cent pack – General Foods – 1970’s<\/p><\/div>\n

It’s clear that this is the exact package version parodied because of the inclusion of the “20” from the 20-cent price as the “20 explosions” on the parody.\u00a0 Pretty neat!<\/p>\n
