Answer to Fun Dip: 1980&#8217;s Dip-It Candy!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=5054\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5054\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5054\" title=\"CC_Dip It Title Plate\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/CC_Dip-It-Title-Plate.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"463\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/CC_Dip-It-Title-Plate.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/CC_Dip-It-Title-Plate-300x135.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As I chronicled earlier this year, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?p=3517\" target=\"_blank\">Sunline introduced Fun Dip to the world in 1973<\/a>.\u00a0 In those first few years, Fun Dip became a huge hit in the candy world, and of course its still around today.<\/p>\n<p>When something innovative like Fun Dip catches on in the candy biz, it&#8217;s inevitable that others will try to &#8220;get in on the fun&#8221;, so to speak.\u00a0\u00a0 Such was the case that a few years after Fun Dip&#8217;s introduction, Topps rolled out a similar product called Dip-It Candy.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Dip-It is a product that I have very specific memories of from my childhood.\u00a0 I believe I was already a Fun Dip fan at the time, but when I saw this new product in my Woolworth&#8217;s candy isle, I had to try it.\u00a0 I was powerfully intrigued.\u00a0 You see, this was Fun Dip served out of a padlock style container and instead of a simple stick, you got a candy key!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5056\" style=\"width: 799px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=5056\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5056\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5056\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5056\" title=\"CC_Topps - Dip-It Candy - sell sheet - 1980\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/CC_Topps-Dip-It-Candy-sell-sheet-1980.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"789\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/CC_Topps-Dip-It-Candy-sell-sheet-1980.jpg 789w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/CC_Topps-Dip-It-Candy-sell-sheet-1980-231x300.jpg 231w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 789px) 100vw, 789px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5056\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Topps &#8211; Dip-It Candy &#8211; sell sheet &#8211; 1980<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I don&#8217;t recall if I came across or tried Dip-It more than that initial time.\u00a0 I do have a vague recollection of being disappointed that the lock didn&#8217;t function in any way &#8212; it was simply a single piece, molded in the locked position.\u00a0 I suppose I&#8217;d been spoiled by the cereal premium locks of my youth which had moving parts and worked (though wouldn&#8217;t hold against much stress) and the other candy containers of the time, which typically had functioning clasps and hinges.\u00a0 Still, Dip-It was an intriguing offering, and the experience of trying it created a memory that lasted with me through the years.<\/p>\n<p>As a collector, I tracked down the sell sheet for the product last year, and immediately noted how the illustration of the kid on the display box seemed to be a direct play on the Fun Dip kid-mascot.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve illustrated the similarities with this graphic:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5057\" style=\"width: 922px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=5057\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5057\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5057\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5057\" title=\"CC_Topps Dip-It - Sunline Fun-Dip - Flattery\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/CC_Topps-Dip-It-Sunline-Fun-Dip-Flattery.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"912\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/CC_Topps-Dip-It-Sunline-Fun-Dip-Flattery.jpg 912w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/CC_Topps-Dip-It-Sunline-Fun-Dip-Flattery-267x300.jpg 267w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 912px) 100vw, 912px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5057\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Imitation IS the best form of flattery, no?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I guess Dip-It was sort of the Android version of Fun Dip&#8230;Bazinga!\u00a0 I kid&#8230; I kid&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>While Dip-It Candy didn&#8217;t last long, Fun Dip became a confectionery classic.\u00a0 Even so, I still have a soft place in my heart for Topps&#8217; short-lived candy-powder-filled-padlock-with-the-candy-key.<\/p>\n<p>Because of that fondness I was thrilled when an actual package for Dip-It came to me via the ever-amazing L.M.
