Bite-Size and By-the-Bag &#8211; Old-School."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=489\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-489\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-489\" title=\"Brach's Logo\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Brachs-Logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"798\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Brachs-Logo.jpg 798w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Brachs-Logo-300x106.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 798px) 100vw, 798px\" \/><\/a>Growing up, one of my favorite spots at the grocery store was the Brach&#8217;s bulk candy or Pick-A-Mix area.\u00a0 Decades before the modern bulk candy sections of super-stores, Brach&#8217;s kept the old-fashioned general store feeling alive with their candy sales areas.<\/p>\n<p>Encouraging you to grab a bag and fill it up, the Brach&#8217;s kiosks offered a great way to get a nice variety of treats.\u00a0 These diminutive delights were varied to my young palette, with some becoming lifelong favorites, while others remaining exotic strangers I would never get to know.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Some of you out there might remember the Brach&#8217;s areas in grocery stores as easy prey for &#8220;sampling hands&#8221;.\u00a0 And I suppose they were good for that, too.\u00a0 Though I never sampled off-the-books.\u00a0 I was not a confectionery crook.\u00a0 Though I recall friends of mine that were.<\/p>\n<p>As a candy collector, the Brach&#8217;s bulk offerings don&#8217;t present an obvious appeal.\u00a0 Typically lacking any kind of colorful wrapper, logo, or mascot (there are exceptions), the visual appeal of these cello wrapped treats was a combination of the color and shape of the goodies they contained.<\/p>\n<p>So, as a collector, I was fortunate when I came upon a salesman display of Brach&#8217;s bulk offerings, from the era of my childhood, the 1970&#8217;s.\u00a0 All presented as they were from my candy-isle memories.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_490\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=490\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-490\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-490\" class=\"size-full wp-image-490\" title=\"CC_Brach's bulk candies salesman display - 1970's\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/CC_Brachs-bulk-candies-salesman-display-1970s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/CC_Brachs-bulk-candies-salesman-display-1970s.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/CC_Brachs-bulk-candies-salesman-display-1970s-300x197.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-490\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brach&#8217;s &#8211; bulk candy salesman display &#8211; 1970&#8217;s<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When I first found this display, I will admit to a bit of surprise and wonderment, at the condition of the candy it contained.\u00a0 As I will later showcase here on CollectingCandy.com, after a certain number of years, most candy goes bad.\u00a0 Let me rephrase that; it doesn&#8217;t go bad&#8230; it goes downright evil.\u00a0\u00a0 So, when I look at this, even now (it hangs in my living room), I am mystified as to why the candy appears as if it was plucked out of 1976.<\/p>\n<p>I have theorized that the lack of confectionery-decomposition might be due to some kind of lacquering applied by the company for the sales kits &#8211; or perhaps it is simply a case of the pieces aging well.\u00a0 I honestly don&#8217;t know, and I&#8217;m not able to do any more investigation without risk of damage to the pieces as they are.<\/p>\n<p>Several childhood favorites are represented within the display, and I&#8217;d like to highlight a few &#8211; 1970&#8217;s<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Brach&#8217;s Cinnamon Bears, or &#8220;giant&#8221; cinnamon bears as I called them, were a great bit of candy.\u00a0 Being cinnamon, they were an automatic favorite of mine.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m especially fond of the Cinnamon Bear piece from the display.\u00a0 When I look at the typeface and logo on that tiny cellophane wrapper, it takes me right back to that childhood grocery store, and countless candy bowls.\u00a0 These bears were also large enough that, biting the head off of them provided a satisfying amount of chewy cinnamon, all by itself.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_492\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=492\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-492\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-492\" class=\"size-full wp-image-492\" title=\"Brach's cinnamon disc - 1970's\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Brachs-cinnamon-disc-1970s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Brachs-cinnamon-disc-1970s.jpg 800w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Brachs-cinnamon-disc-1970s-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-492\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brach&#8217;s Cinnamon Disc &#8211; 1970&#8217;s<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It is at this point you may have realized that I love cinnamon candies &#8211; I won&#8217;t apologize for it.\u00a0 I hope I&#8217;m not boring you with them.\u00a0 A-hem.<\/p>\n<p>Brach&#8217;s Cinnamon Discs were the treats I would typically cherry pick out of my grandmother&#8217;s candy dish, or your grandmother&#8217;s candy dish, or your aunt&#8217;s.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll admit it, there was a time that if you allowed me into your home, I&#8217;d liberate it of any and all cinnamon discs.\u00a0 I still might.<\/p>\n<p>At first blush, there&#8217;s not much going on design-wise with these little wrappers, but they still have the power to evoke a memory.\u00a0\u00a0 When I see the same candies now, in their current modern wrapper, they do remain appealing and certainly delicious.\u00a0 But there is something powerful about seeing them as you first had them, so long ago.\u00a0 There is for me, at least.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_493\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=493\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-493\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-493\" class=\"size-large wp-image-493\" title=\"Brach's - butterscotch discs - 1970's\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Brachs-butterscotch-discs-1970s-716x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"915\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Brachs-butterscotch-discs-1970s-716x1024.jpg 716w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Brachs-butterscotch-discs-1970s-209x300.jpg 209w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Brachs-butterscotch-discs-1970s.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-493\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brach&#8217;s Butterscotch Discs &#8211; 1970&#8217;s<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Moving past the Coconut Hawaiian &#8211; I was never a fan of coconut candies as a kid (admittedly that has changed as my tastes have broadened) &#8211; so I&#8217;ve included it here only because it shared a chamber with the caramel.<\/p>\n<p>Brach&#8217;s Caramels were another favorite.\u00a0 Easy to confuse with Kraft caramel squares, these were melt-in-your-mouth good, and likely responsible for at least a few of my early cavities.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_495\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=495\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-495\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-495\" class=\"size-full wp-image-495\" title=\"Brach's Royals - 1970's\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/CC_Brachs-Royals-1970s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/CC_Brachs-Royals-1970s.jpg 800w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/CC_Brachs-Royals-1970s-300x116.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-495\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brach&#8217;s Royals &#8211; 1970&#8217;s<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Back in the day, I don&#8217;t think I quite understood Brach&#8217;s Royals.\u00a0 I know I liked some of the flavors, but the others I wasn&#8217;t a fan of.\u00a0 I would pick around the flavors I didn&#8217;t like, inspecting the foil wrapping, and when realizing it wasn&#8217;t &#8220;a good one&#8221;, I&#8217;d toss it back into the bowl, or wherever they were offered.<\/p>\n<p>Over the holidays a few months ago, I saw the contemporary version of these (thanks to the return and relaunch of the Brach&#8217;s brand) and picked up a bag.\u00a0 I found that these days, I love them all.\u00a0 The colored foil on these vintage examples are striking in person, and they are probably some of the few Brach&#8217;s bulk-packaged pieces wrappers that could easily stand on their own, sans-candy.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_496\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=496\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-496\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-496\" class=\"size-full wp-image-496\" title=\"CC_Brach's Perkys - 1970's\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/CC_Brachs-Perkys-1970s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/CC_Brachs-Perkys-1970s.jpg 800w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/CC_Brachs-Perkys-1970s-300x135.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-496\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brach&#8217;s Perkys &#8211;
