{"id":4061,"date":"2012-05-18T09:57:14","date_gmt":"2012-05-18T13:57:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?p=4061"},"modified":"2014-03-28T00:36:23","modified_gmt":"2014-03-28T04:36:23","slug":"the-goonies-had-a-candy-bar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?p=4061","title":{"rendered":"The Goonies had a candy bar?!?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=4062\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4062\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4062\" title=\"CC_Goonies Candy bar title plate\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CC_Goonies-Candy-bar-title-plate.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CC_Goonies-Candy-bar-title-plate.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CC_Goonies-Candy-bar-title-plate-300x140.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a>One of the fun things about candy history, and about product packaging more broadly, is that it&#8217;s something that isn&#8217;t very well documented.\u00a0 For me, that means I get to become a bit of a pop-culture archeologist, hunting for things and revealing things that a lot of folks don&#8217;t remember, or never even knew existed.\u00a0 There isn&#8217;t too much primary research being done in the realm of pop culture, but with candy packaging and candy history, there is.<\/p>\n<p>For years over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jasonliebigstuff\/\" target=\"_blank\">on Flickr<\/a>, I&#8217;ve been endeavoring to track down items and share high-quality images of things that you couldn&#8217;t see anywhere else, and I&#8217;m continuing to do that in a different, more-focused way here on this site.<\/p>\n<p>Today is one of those special days where I get to reveal a piece of pop culture ephemera (and confectionery packaging history) to the world that most folks have never seen.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->If you remember Steven Spielberg&#8217;s <em>The Goonies<\/em>, you may remember that the character Chunk befriends Sloth, partially through sharing a Baby Ruth with him.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4063\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=4063\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4063\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4063\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4063\" title=\"600full-the-goonies-screenshot\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/600full-the-goonies-screenshot.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/600full-the-goonies-screenshot.jpg 400w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/600full-the-goonies-screenshot-300x226.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4063\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">These guys love their Baby Ruths!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When the film was released in 1985, Nabisco Brands was the company that owned the Baby Ruth and Butterfinger brands.\u00a0 Nabisco had acquired the brands of the Curtiss company some years earlier, though years later they would pass to Nestle.\u00a0 Most Goonies fans are well aware of the Baby Ruth connection to the film.\u00a0 What most fans probably don&#8217;t know is that after the film came out, Nabisco&#8217;s Canadian arm released a Goonies licensed candy bar, and it&#8217;s a cool one.<\/p>\n<p>It might seem hard to believe, but I have the wrapper and I&#8217;m going to share it with you right now:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13865\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13865\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13865\" alt=\"Canada - Nabisco - The Goonies - candy bar wrapper - 1985\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CC_Canada-Nabisco-The-Goonies-candy-bar-wrapper-19851.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"902\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CC_Canada-Nabisco-The-Goonies-candy-bar-wrapper-19851.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CC_Canada-Nabisco-The-Goonies-candy-bar-wrapper-19851-300x264.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13865\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Canada &#8211; Nabisco &#8211; The Goonies &#8211; candy bar wrapper &#8211; 1985<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It&#8217;s a strikingly beautiful wrapper that captures the search-for-buried-treasure element of the film.\u00a0 It also features Sloth, rather than any of the human characters (maybe they couldn&#8217;t get or afford the rights to any of the other actors&#8217; likenesses &#8211; I&#8217;m not sure).<\/p>\n<p>I honestly don&#8217;t know any historical details about this bar, other than what the wrapper itself reveals.\u00a0 Until recently, I&#8217;d never heard a thing about the existence of this one, and from what I can tell there is not a single mention of it anywhere on the internet, not even a whisper or a distant recollection.\u00a0 With most oddball forgotten candy products, you can at least find a forum post with someone talking about them, but not so with The Goonies candy bar.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of those lost gems of the confectionery world, as well as of Goonies history.<\/p>\n<p>For now, we can at least be certain that it did exist.\u00a0 It is lost no longer, and Goonies fans can begin to wonder why this one never made it to their corner store.<\/p>\n<p>Do any of my Canadian readers remember this one?\u00a0 Or anyone else for that matter?\u00a0 If you do, please let us know by leaving a comment.<\/p>\n<p>This is everything I&#8217;ve got on The Goonies candy bar.\u00a0 I figure this is enough for today.\u00a0 I hope seeing this one blew some of your minds, as much as it did mine.\u00a0 See you back here tomorrow!<\/p>\n<p>One last thing &#8211;
