{"id":3875,"date":"2012-05-07T12:15:21","date_gmt":"2012-05-07T16:15:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?p=3875"},"modified":"2012-05-07T12:15:22","modified_gmt":"2012-05-07T16:15:22","slug":"gorp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?p=3875","title":{"rendered":"GORP!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_3876\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=3876\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3876\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3876\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3876\" title=\"CC_Gorp image from 1978 Candy and Snack Industry magazine\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CC_Gorp-image-from-1978-Candy-and-Snack-Industry-magazine.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CC_Gorp-image-from-1978-Candy-and-Snack-Industry-magazine.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CC_Gorp-image-from-1978-Candy-and-Snack-Industry-magazine-300x122.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3876\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GORP Plus - black-and-white image from 1978 trade magazine.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>GORP might sound like the name of some invertebrate globular alien Star Trek character, or an odd comic book sound-effect, but it&#8217;s not &#8211; at least that&#8217;s not all that it is.\u00a0 Gorp was a confectionery brand name &#8211; an acronym for &#8220;Good Ol&#8217; Raisins &amp; Peanuts&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of those 70&#8217;s treats I don&#8217;t really recall, possibly because it contained raisins, and while I&#8217;m sure raisins are truly &#8220;nature&#8217;s candy&#8221;, they were never really mine.\u00a0 I first came across GORP in a 1970&#8217;s candy industry trade magazine, while doing candy-related research at the New York Public Library (yes, I do candy-research at the library, don&#8217;t beat me up).\u00a0 I snapped a photo of the image in question, and that very photo is today&#8217;s title shot.<\/p>\n<p>Though it was only a black-and-white image, I immediately became enamored with the packaging and the odd name.\u00a0 It was just weird enough and just 70&#8217;s enough that I couldn&#8217;t help myself.\u00a0\u00a0 As I have with many of my candy first-sightings, I made a note and added GORP to my want-list of vintage candy packaging I would one day hope to find.\u00a0 Lucky for me, I recently did.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->From out of the wonderful L.M. Kallok Collection came not one, but two very different GORP packages.\u00a0 This following package appears to be an earlier version (though it could be a later version) than the Nabisco Confections&#8217; Raisins and Peanuts Plus Real Chocolate Chips - candy package - 1970&#39;s<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It&#8217;s great to be able to show the GORP package complete and in color &#8211; I think it&#8217;s pretty dynamite.\u00a0 This next GORP package comes from 1980, and I&#8217;m not sure what to make of it:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3878\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=3878\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3878\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3878\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3878\" title=\"CC_David &amp; Sons - GORP Good Old Raisins &amp; Peanuts - candy bar wrapper - 1980<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As you can see, the 1980 package is a huge departure from the design shown on the earlier ones.\u00a0 Also, this version of GORP is produced by David &amp; Sons, rather than Nabisco.\u00a0 Finally, it lacks the &#8220;Plus&#8221; of chocolate chips, so it&#8217;s a move into a pure healthy bar, rather than a confectionery one.<\/p>\n<p>At the moment, I don&#8217;t know the whole story on this.\u00a0 Perhaps GORP was not something that Nabisco had trademarked, or perhaps David &amp;
