{"id":3713,"date":"2012-05-01T13:50:27","date_gmt":"2012-05-01T17:50:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?p=3713"},"modified":"2012-05-01T13:50:28","modified_gmt":"2012-05-01T17:50:28","slug":"from-the-oddball-files-australias-lifesavers-musk-flavor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?p=3713","title":{"rendered":"From the Oddball Files &#8211; Australia&#8217;s LifeSavers Musk flavor."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ah, flavor&#8230; it&#8217;s a funny thing, especially where candy is concerned.\u00a0\u00a0 What one person finds delicious, another finds awful. \u00a0 I don&#8217;t spend too much time discussing the flavors of candy, as that&#8217;s not what the focus on this site is about, but today&#8217;s article requires that I do.<\/p>\n<p>Flavor preferences can diversify quite a bit when you travel around the world.\u00a0 I recently had a friend explain that he&#8217;d offered a Reese&#8217;s Peanut Butter Cup to someone overseas, and the person he offered it to thought it tasted terrible.\u00a0 To me, that&#8217;s crazy because Reese&#8217;s PB Cups are one of the most delicious treats ever.\u00a0\u00a0 But that illustrates that each culture has its own traditional flavors and palettes.<\/p>\n<p>When I first started collecting candy packaging, one of the surprises I encountered was that in Australia, there was a flavor of LifeSavers I&#8217;d never heard of before, and one that I found particularly odd &#8211; Musk.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3715\" style=\"width: 791px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=3715\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3715\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3715\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3715\" title=\"CC_Life Savers MUSK 1980's roll image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CC_Life-Savers-MUSK-1980s-roll-image.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"781\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CC_Life-Savers-MUSK-1980s-roll-image.jpg 781w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CC_Life-Savers-MUSK-1980s-roll-image-300x77.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 781px) 100vw, 781px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3715\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Australia - LifeSavers Musk candy roll - 1980&#39;s<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--> It turns out that Musk is a traditional flavor of confection in Australia.\u00a0 But to someone in the United States, it&#8217;s nothing short of exotic and weird. \u00a0 As soon as I found out about Musk LifeSavers, I went online and ordered a few rolls.<\/p>\n<p>Upon receiving the package of these strange treats, I cracked open a roll and saw the pink opaque LifeSaver rings&#8230; they looked a bit like LifeSaver Pepto-Bismols.\u00a0\u00a0 I tried them and I&#8217;ll be frank &#8211; I just couldn&#8217;t warm up to the flavor.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been asked what they taste like and the way I&#8217;ve always described the experience is this way:\u00a0 &#8220;They tasted like my grandmother&#8217;s makeup smelled.&#8221;\u00a0 Not a good flavor for candy.<\/p>\n<p>In spite of my inability to come to terms with this traditional Australian flavor, I nonetheless became quite enamored with the packaging, and with the idea of Musk Lifesavers &#8211; the oddest branch of the LifeSavers flavor tree.<\/p>\n<p>Those rolls I ordered back in 2007 were presented just like the LifeSavers I was used to: an approximately 4-inch foil-wrapped roll with a paper wrapper around that.\u00a0 Here is an example of a roll-wrapper from one of the packs:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3716\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=3716\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3716\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3716\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3716\" title=\"CC_Life Savers MUSK roll wrapper 2007\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CC_Life-Savers-MUSK-roll-wrapper-2007.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1251\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CC_Life-Savers-MUSK-roll-wrapper-2007.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CC_Life-Savers-MUSK-roll-wrapper-2007-245x300.jpg 245w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CC_Life-Savers-MUSK-roll-wrapper-2007-838x1024.jpg 838w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3716\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Australia - 2012<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t until last month that my hunt for a vintage Musk LifeSavers wrapper finally came to fruition.\u00a0 After five years of hunting, a search on Australia&#8217;s eBay finally turned up a 1950&#8217;s Musk LifeSavers roll wrapper.\u00a0 I was fortunate enough to win it and I can now share it here.\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s been a long-time coming and it&#8217;s great to finally be able to add one of these to my collection:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3721\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=3721\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3721\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3721\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3721\" title=\"CC_Australia -
