Play Ball bubble gum - cellophane package - 1970&#39;s<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->That first wrapper posted for today, is a cellophane tube-style package for Leaf&#8217;s Play Ball bubble gum &#8211; which were bubble gum balls designed to look like little baseballs.\u00a0\u00a0 Leaf produced these for many years, in various styles.\u00a0 I have a photo of a display box from the late 70&#8217;s of these, and you can sort of make out what the gum itself looked like:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3066\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=3066\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3066\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3066\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3066\" title=\"CC_Leaf Play Ball bubble gum display box photo - Screaming Sour Screwballs - scratch off game insert - 1986<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Moving on from bubble gum, I want to turn the attention toward a baseball legend, and 1970&#8217;s chocolate bar icon &#8211; the Reggie Bar.\u00a0\u00a0 Introduced in 1978, the bar was a pretty big deal, and it sported a package that is nearly as iconic as the man himself:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3074\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=3074\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3074\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3074\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3074\" title=\"CC_Reggie bar wrapper - Advertising Age - February 1978<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Standard Brands was the company that launched the Reggie bar, and Curtiss was a part of Standard Brands.\u00a0 I have another 70&#8217;s Reggie wrapper, this one a different shape and with a 25-cent printed-on price.\u00a0 The wrapper also lacks any indication of the Curtiss name:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3078\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=3078\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3078\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3078\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3078\" title=\"CC_Standard Brands - Reggie Bar - 25-cent candy bar wrapper - late 1970&#39;s<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think the Reggie bar lasted too long into the 1980&#8217;s, but it made a comeback during the baseball card collecting craze of the early 1990&#8217;s, thanks to Upper Deck, and Clark.\u00a0 This time the wrapper deviated from its decidedly Wheaties-like orange and shifted to a primarily red wrapper &#8211; the new Reggie also dropped caramel from its ingredients list and instead added peanut butter:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3079\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=3079\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3079\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3079\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3079\" title=\"CC_Clark -
