{"id":2329,"date":"2012-03-13T12:38:51","date_gmt":"2012-03-13T16:38:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?p=2329"},"modified":"2012-03-13T12:38:51","modified_gmt":"2012-03-13T16:38:51","slug":"topps-lotsa-loot-money-money-money-money-candy-money","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?p=2329","title":{"rendered":"Topps&#8217; Lotsa Loot &#8211; Money, Money, Money, Money &#8211; Candy-Money!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m not sure about everyone else, but when I was a kid it was always fun playing with pretend money.\u00a0 Be it Monopoly or play money or the occasional odd foreign coin that would find their way into my hands, I was good for all of it.\u00a0 Even when it was presented to me as an edible treat. \u00a0 Before you would eat it, it was a secret treasure.<\/p>\n<p>While commonly encountered as foil-covered chocolate coins, the concept of candy served up in a form appealing to the numismatist (a coin collector) is a recurring theme even in non-chocolate candy. \u00a0 The Topps company produced at least two novelty candy coin offerings that I&#8217;ve come across, and today I&#8217;ll be covering my favorite of them:\u00a0 Lotsa Loot.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2330\" style=\"width: 237px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=2330\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2330\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2330\" class=\" wp-image-2330  \" title=\"CC_Topps - Lotsa Loot full display box small image<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->Sold in the early-to-mid 1970&#8217;s, Lotsa Loot likely competed with products such as Sweettarts and Bottle Caps.\u00a0 Featuring similar packaging, the candy also approximated the look and size of those other confections, while offering a standard array of flavors.<\/p>\n<p>After looking for a Lotsa Loot pack for quite some time, I was thrilled when I recently added this sealed example to my collection.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2337\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=2337\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2337\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2337\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2337\" title=\"CC_Topps - Lotsa Loot - candy package - early-to-mid 1970&#39;s<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As to the dates on this one, I can only make an educated guess.\u00a0 Lacking any UPC on the package would typically indicate that this pack dates to the earlier 70&#8217;s, but that is not a hard rule.\u00a0 UPC&#8217;s first started making their on-product appearances in 1974 but they were not widely adopted until later in the decade.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond this individual pack, I also have a Lotsa Loot 10-cent display box in my files:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2338\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=2338\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2338\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2338\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2338\" title=\"CC_Topps - Lotsa Loot candy box color proof sheet - 1970&#39;s<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And that&#8217;s everything I&#8217;ve got, and in fact everything I&#8217;ve ever seen, on Lotsa Loot.\u00a0 It was a great release from a period in Topps&#8217; history of novelty candy that I&#8217;m quite fond of.<\/p>\n<p>One final shot to share:\u00a0 Here&#8217;s one of the only images I&#8217;ve come across for Topps&#8217; Candy Pennies.\u00a0 Sold at the same time as Lotsa Loot, I&#8217;ve yet to encounter a package (they were sold in rolls) or a display box:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2348\" style=\"width: 298px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=2348\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2348\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2348\" class=\" wp-image-2348 \" title=\"Topps -
