The Adult Bubble Gum."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve previously pointed out that the history of candy and gum packaging is largely unknown.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a bit like a fossil record in that for every piece you&#8217;ve seen, there are likely ten more that you haven&#8217;t.\u00a0 For me that&#8217;s fun because it means there are always new surprises to find and new mysteries to uncover.<\/p>\n<p>Oftentimes those mysteries surround a short-lived spinoff or packaging variation of a well-known brand.\u00a0\u00a0 Other times they include products that were around for such a short period of time, that no one remembers them at all.<\/p>\n<p>Such may be the case with this early 70&#8217;s product from Topps; Ringers Bubble Gum.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2065\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=2065\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2065\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2065\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2065\" title=\"CC_Ringers box sideart logo - title plate\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/CC_Ringers-box-sideart-logo-title-plate.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/CC_Ringers-box-sideart-logo-title-plate.jpg 800w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/CC_Ringers-box-sideart-logo-title-plate-300x113.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2065\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ringers - The Adult Bubble Gum<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->I don&#8217;t remember Ringers gum, but based on what I&#8217;ve been able to figure out, it should have been released by Topps around 1970 or 1971.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve managed to uncover a number of vintage pieces for Ringers, and while they&#8217;re all interesting, there is little consistency between them.\u00a0 It&#8217;s made defining just what this product might have been kinda tough.<\/p>\n<p>My favorite Ringers piece describes it as &#8220;The Adult Bubble Gum&#8221; &#8211; it is an unfolded display box that originally came out of Topps&#8217; internal files &#8211; it&#8217;s also where I grabbed today&#8217;s title image:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2066\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=2066\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2066\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2066\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2066\" title=\"CC_Topps - Ringers bubble gum 10-cent display box flat - 1970's\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/CC_Topps-Ringers-bubble-gum-10-cent-display-box-flat-1970s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"978\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2066\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Topps - Ringers bubble gum 10-cent display box flat - 1970&#39;s<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This display box reveals a groovy Mod design sensibility, one made popular during the 1960&#8217;s.\u00a0 We see that the gum itself has a flower-power look to it with one piece looking like it has been tie-dyed.\u00a0\u00a0 This display box also sports the tagline &#8220;The Adult Bubble Gum&#8221;, so it would seem that Ringers were meant to be marketed toward hip adults, rather than Topps&#8217; normal child-age demographic.<\/p>\n<p>In spite of this, the other Ringers piece I have is an unscored (uncut) display box file flat that appears to be targeting kids:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2069\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=2069\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2069\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2069\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2069\" title=\"CC_Topps - Ringers bubble gum 5-cent display box w kid uncut - 1970's\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/CC_Topps-Ringers-bubble-gum-5-cent-display-box-w-kid-uncut-1970s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"650\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/CC_Topps-Ringers-bubble-gum-5-cent-display-box-w-kid-uncut-1970s.jpg 450w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/CC_Topps-Ringers-bubble-gum-5-cent-display-box-w-kid-uncut-1970s-207x300.jpg 207w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2069\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Topps - Ringers bubble gum 5-cent display box w kid uncut - 1970&#39;s<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Unfortunately, I don&#8217;t have any individual pieces of Ringers packaging.\u00a0 It&#8217;s possible that Ringers was never more than a test-marketed or internally-tested item, which may explain the lack of consistency in target or marketing approach.\u00a0\u00a0 This may also explain why the only known Ringers pieces have all come from internal Topps sources.\u00a0\u00a0 To my knowledge, there has never been a Ringers piece found in the wild.<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, when I was researching this, I found that a seller on eBay is currently offering what appear to be two early concept illustrations for Ringers bubble gum.\u00a0\u00a0 I contacted the seller and he agreed to let me include them in this article (thanks, Bill!).<\/p>\n<p>Both of these concept art pieces reveal a kid-targeted approach, with one of them showing a kind of pouch for the packaging, appearing very similar to Topps&#8217;
