January 1978<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I was delighted to finally find some quality photos of vintage candy product shown (there were LOTS of photos of machinery in this particular collection of trade magazines).\u00a0 But what really caught my eye was something I&#8217;d never seen before&#8230; January 1978<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Up to that time, I&#8217;d never come across any images, references or evidence of any kind that such a product existed and I had no personal memory of it from the era, either.\u00a0\u00a0 I was amazed and intrigued and I wanted to learn more.<\/p>\n<p>The magazine was dated January 1978, so I assumed the product was on shelves by 1977, and the square pack format lead me to a series of deductions.\u00a0 You see, just a few years earlier <a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?p=13136\" target=\"_blank\">Bubble Yum bubblegum<\/a> had launched in the United States, and it was one of the biggest sales hits in the history of bubblegum.\u00a0\u00a0 Bubble Yum&#8217;s launch of the &#8220;soft chunk&#8221; late 70&#8217;s candy shelves close-up<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And finally, just over a year ago, I acquired a small lot of candy packaging and wrappers from the late 1970&#8217;s to early 1980&#8217;s &#8211; Blow Pop Candies &#8211; 1 1\/4oz cubed pack bubblegum wrapper &#8211; 1976-77<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It&#8217;s so great to not only discover a piece like this, what is essentially a long-forgotten extension of the iconic Blow Pop brand, but to be able to document it and share it.<\/p>\n<p>Just as exciting, after more research, I&#8217;ve learned that even though &#8220;Blow Pop Candies&#8221; were a spin-off of the Blow Pop, the underlying format of the Blow Pop Candies square pack may have been responsible for the initial creation of Blow Pops themselves.\u00a0 That might sound confusing and the thread of this historic tale risks becoming serpentine, so I&#8217;ll endeavor to keep it as clear as possible.\u00a0 We&#8217;re going to jump back to Blow Pop&#8217;s origins, before we jump back even further to my full-circle theory of invention.<\/p>\n<p>First, we must look at Blow Pop&#8217;s earliest days as a product.\u00a0 My research shows that Blow Pop launched nationally in late 1971, with an earlier period of regional test-marketing as announced in the following industry trade clipping:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19402\" style=\"width: 416px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19402\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19402\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/CC_Charms-Blow-Pops-Introduction-after-Test-Market-candy-trade-announcement-clipping-November-1971.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"406\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/CC_Charms-Blow-Pops-Introduction-after-Test-Market-candy-trade-announcement-clipping-November-1971.jpg 406w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/CC_Charms-Blow-Pops-Introduction-after-Test-Market-candy-trade-announcement-clipping-November-1971-119x300.jpg 119w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 406px) 100vw, 406px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19402\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charms Blow Pops Introduction after Test Market &#8211;
