wrappers represents an era when Russia and the Soviet Union was a mysterious place to most westerners, myself included.\u00a0 While I was growing up in the Midwest there was almost no media coming out of the Soviet Union, so my image of it and its people was heavily influenced by popular culture and the movies.\u00a0 Given that fact, this set of chocolate bar wrappers is particularly fascinating for me to look back at now.<\/p>\n<p>So make the jump to take a peek at some fun confectionery packaging from behind the Iron Curtain!<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->When I try to recall my childhood idea of the Soviet Union, I think back to two early 1980&#8217;s films, Red Dawn and Clint Eastwood&#8217;s Firefox.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16021\" style=\"width: 818px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16021\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16021\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Clint-Eastwood-Firefox-collage-Source-Wallpapers.jpg\" alt=\"Clint Eastwood Firefox collage - Source Wallpapers\" width=\"808\" height=\"606\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Clint-Eastwood-Firefox-collage-Source-Wallpapers.jpg 808w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Clint-Eastwood-Firefox-collage-Source-Wallpapers-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 808px) 100vw, 808px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16021\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Clint Eastwood Firefox collage &#8211; Source <a href=\"http:\/\/fr.forwallpaper.com\/wallpaper\/firefox-starring-clint-eastwood-335713.html\" target=\"_blank\">ForWallpaper.com<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Firefox was the tale of an American (Eastwood) who goes undercover (and into Moscow) to steal a top secret, futuristic fighter jet.\u00a0 I recall being struck at seeing the cinematic Moscow portrayed on screen and thinking how cool it was to see the place, as modern images of it were virtually nonexistent at the time.<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that due to the Cold War, Firefox was not able to shoot in Russia and was actually shot on location in Vienna and Austria.\u00a0 So, I wasn&#8217;t even seeing the real Moscow in that movie, but it shaped my mental image of how the pace looked nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p>Another early cinematic Cold War memory is that of the John Milius film, Red Dawn.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16022\" style=\"width: 701px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16022\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16022\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/CC_Red-Dawn-tryptich.jpg\" alt=\"Red Dawn tryptich\" width=\"691\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/CC_Red-Dawn-tryptich.jpg 691w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/CC_Red-Dawn-tryptich-202x300.jpg 202w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 691px) 100vw, 691px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16022\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Red Dawn frame grabs &#8211; 1984<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Unlike Firefox, Red Dawn was actually set in the Midwestern United States, albeit one that had been invaded by Russian-led military forces.\u00a0 It&#8217;s quite an 80&#8217;s action\/war romp, with a great soundtrack and a fun cast to boot.<\/p>\n<p>I bring this all up to highlight that, up until the 1990&#8217;s, the Soviet Union and Russia was a pretty mysterious place to outsiders, and one that generated a good deal of trepidation and fear.\u00a0 It was an unknown region and one where you wouldn&#8217;t have imagined colorful chocolate bar wrappers being produced &#8212; and yet they were.\u00a0 Though I suppose it could be fairly said that the following wrappers had a nationalistic message to them.<\/p>\n<p>Since I didn&#8217;t go about translating these wrappers, I&#8217;ve simply dubbed them the &#8220;Soviet Uniform&#8221;
