Clark company launched what was at the time, their latest version of a chocolate-coated coconut bar.\u00a0 While the bar itself might not have been revolutionary, mixing the title of their flagship brand with the bar&#8217;s main ingredient provided a fun and catchy new name to pitch to consumers:\u00a0 The Clarconut!<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Before I get to the Clarconut, it&#8217;s important to understand that it was merely a re-branding of Clark&#8217;s earlier chocolate-coated coconut bar, billed as new to generate excitement and interest.\u00a0 But they&#8217;d been making a bar that was the same, or nearly so, for decades.<\/p>\n<p>I have an example of a foil Clark Coconut bar wrapper that dates back to the 1950&#8217;s, though I&#8217;ve seen even earlier versions.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s mine:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15655\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15655\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15655\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/CC_DL-Clark-Clark-Coconut-foil-candy-bar-wrapper-1950s-1960s.jpg\" alt=\"DL Clark - Clark Coconut - foil candy bar wrapper - 1950's 1960's\" width=\"1024\" height=\"749\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/CC_DL-Clark-Clark-Coconut-foil-candy-bar-wrapper-1950s-1960s.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/CC_DL-Clark-Clark-Coconut-foil-candy-bar-wrapper-1950s-1960s-300x219.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-15655\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DL Clark &#8211; Clark Coconut &#8211; foil candy bar wrapper &#8211; 1950&#8217;s 1960&#8217;s<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I&#8217;ve always liked this early Clark Coconut wrapper.\u00a0 First, it&#8217;s printed on foil and though it&#8217;s difficult to convey the look of it via a scan, it&#8217;s quite striking in person.\u00a0 Secondly, I love the classic Clark lightning bolts, a design feature I&#8217;ve appreciated on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?p=1921\" target=\"_blank\">their older Zagnut wrappers as well<\/a>.\u00a0 Finally, there&#8217;s the large inset photo of the cracked-open coconut &#8211; August 1971<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It would seem that the Clark Coconut bar, in the form it was at the time, was not selling as well as they&#8217;d have liked because in 1974 it was relaunched to great fanfare as the Clarconut.<\/p>\n<p>The earliest mention of the Clarconut that I&#8217;ve found in my research dates to June of 1974.\u00a0 It&#8217;s worth noting that this early trade clipping mentions the Clarconut having gone through &#8220;extensive testing&#8221; Clarconut &#8211; 1 1\/4oz chocolate candy bar wrapper &#8211; 1974<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I really do dig that Clarconut wrapper.<\/p>\n<p>Now, keen eyes might notice that the Clarconut wrapper design seems familiar.\u00a0 That&#8217;s because the Clarconut wasn&#8217;t the only dark-chocolate-covered-coconut bar available at the time.\u00a0 It seems possible that Clark was attempting to use the Clarconut wrapper design to associate itself with the better-known classic &#8211; Mounds Comparison image<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I could find no hard evidence that Peter Paul protested the Clarconut design or if it had run afoul of some part of the Mounds visual trademark, but by 1977 Clark had discontinued the Clarconut and returned it to its original &#8220;Clark Coconut&#8221;
