{"id":1281,"date":"2012-02-23T19:41:35","date_gmt":"2012-02-24T00:41:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?p=1281"},"modified":"2012-03-02T01:26:27","modified_gmt":"2012-03-02T06:26:27","slug":"from-out-of-a-time-machine-reeds-candy-boxes-from-the-1970s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?p=1281","title":{"rendered":"From the time-machine &#8211; Reed&#8217;s candy boxes from the 1970&#8217;s."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I posted about those 30-year-old unopened candy bars last week, I said that finding old candy wasn&#8217;t easy so you have to look for it wherever you can.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s post will illustrate that while vintage candy is exceedingly difficult to find, it is out there and sometimes just takes the right kind of curiosity to uncover.\u00a0 With that in mind, I&#8217;m going to share how I came into possession of a decades-old case of Reeds candy.<\/p>\n<p>For those that don&#8217;t know, Reeds were a roll candy, somewhat similar to Lifesavers though they had their own appeal and dedicated fans.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1294\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=1294\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1294\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1294\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1294\" title=\"CC_Reed's trade ad -1968\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/CC_Reeds-trade-ad-1968.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"1124\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/CC_Reeds-trade-ad-1968.jpg 400w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/CC_Reeds-trade-ad-1968-364x1024.jpg 364w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1294\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reed&#39;s candy trade ad - 1968<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->I liked Reeds quite a lot, especially the Cinnamon and Butterscotch flavors.\u00a0 Growing up in the 1970&#8217;s I could find them in most candy isles.\u00a0\u00a0 Into the 1990&#8217;s, they would become less and less common, and I&#8217;d only see them occasionally.\u00a0 Sadly, they ceased production in 2005 or 2006, but I&#8217;m told they may be making a comeback soon.\u00a0 That&#8217;s exciting news for fans of Reeds candy, and I&#8217;ll be sharing more about that as I learn it.<\/p>\n<p>About two years ago, I was talking with an eBay seller who had offered some unusual candy pieces on eBay.\u00a0\u00a0 I was intrigued and asked how he came to be in possession of these items.\u00a0\u00a0 He obliged with a story:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;There was an old convenience store here in north east PA. It has been closed for decades. The place has been around forever. I passed by it a million times but no one was ever there, then one day I saw someone clearing it out and selling what they could.\u00a0 They must have just watched an episode of American Pickers because their prices weren&#8217;t cheap. I found this candy and some others in an old store room that had not seen daylight in 30 years.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That discussion led to his description of the Reeds case and asking if I&#8217;d be interested &#8211; it was musty, and there appeared to be old mold stains or light water damage on the cardboard of the shipper.\u00a0 So the outer box was not great, but it was still cool to see it.\u00a0 Then, I cracked it open.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1283\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=1283\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1283\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1283\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1283\" title=\"CC_Reeds case opened - 1970's\" src=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/CC_Reeds-case-opened-1970s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/CC_Reeds-case-opened-1970s.jpg 800w, http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/CC_Reeds-case-opened-1970s-300x165.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1283\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cracking the case reveals a Reeds-rainbow of vintage candy goodness.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I was relieved when I discovered that each individual display box was sealed in a thick clear plastic, protecting it from whatever that odd aroma was that plagued the cardboard shipper.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled the cinnamon display box out first, and put it up to my nose.\u00a0 A big whiff revealed the faint odor of cinnamon &#8211;
