{"id":1228,"date":"2012-02-22T17:21:20","date_gmt":"2012-02-22T22:21:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?p=1228"},"modified":"2012-03-02T01:27:34","modified_gmt":"2012-03-02T06:27:34","slug":"cellophane-struggles-challenges-of-the-see-thru-stuff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?p=1228","title":{"rendered":"Cellophane Struggles &#8211; Challenges of the See-Thru Stuff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cellophane &#8211; as a candy fan, it&#8217;s easy to love.\u00a0 As a candy packaging collector &#8211; it presents\u00a0 some challenges you have probably never considered.<\/p>\n<p>Cellophane was first conceived by Swiss chemist, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cellophane\" target=\"_blank\">Jacques E. Rain-blo - Easter bubble gum cellophane package - 2011<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While a proven and reliable material for the candy industry, cellophane packaging presents unique problems for the collector.<\/p>\n<p>The first, most obvious issue is that a cello wrapper is largely transparent, and the look of the wrapper is typically designed to have the candy as its background.\u00a0 It is not designed to work on its own.\u00a0 So, without the actual candy to back it, a cello wrapper presents only a portion of the appearance it was designed to achieve.<\/p>\n<p>Chuckles are a classic candy brand and showcase how important the candy itself becomes to complete the look of the packaging:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1233\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=1233\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1233\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1233\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1233\" title=\"CC_Chuckles cello wrapper - Chuckles pages - 1949 - Courtesy Dan Goodsell<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The other major issue with cellophane is wear-and-tear over time and damage from initial opening.<\/p>\n<p>More than any other wrapper type, cello wrappers seem to only open through a destructive series of tears. \u00a0 It&#8217;s tough to open a cello wrapper without causing it to rip, and once that rip starts, it can&#8217;t be stopped.<\/p>\n<p>When you find an older cello package &#8211; it&#8217;s not unusual to find all manner of deformations and destruction.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1239\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=1239\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1239\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1239\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1239\" title=\"CC_Kimberly - cellophane wrapper - 1950&#39;s<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As you can see, wrinkles, rips and partial wrappers are commonplace when cellophane is involved.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also the issue of brittleness.\u00a0\u00a0 Unlike a paper or wax wrapper &#8211; cello wrappers can become incredibly stiff and brittle over time.\u00a0 If a wrapper is folded before it is stored, or bunched up &#8211; it can be difficult to bring back into shape.\u00a0 The act of unfolding a cello wrapper in this condition can cause it to crack and break apart.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1242\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=1242\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1242\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1242\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1242\" title=\"Kroger Company - cello bag package - file copy - 1950&#39;s<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Showing these two together presents quite a contrast.<\/p>\n<p>I found that first damaged and worn Hershey Miniatures bag in a collection saved from the 1950&#8217;s.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a great piece, but the cellophane shows its age.\u00a0 It also reveals the damage incurred when it was first opened.<\/p>\n<p>The second example is one I found as part of a packaging company sales kit.\u00a0 Cellucraft, a company that produced cellophane and plastic packaging, included this piece as part of a folder of examples to show to potential clients.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, the file copy example retains a flexibility the wrinkled one does not.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure exactly why that is.<\/p>\n<p>One final bit of cellophane-based fun.\u00a0 A wrapper for another childhood favorite of mine, and one that is still around &#8211; the oddly-named Chick-o-Stick:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1278\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectingcandy.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=1278\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1278\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1278\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1278\" title=\"CC_Atkinson's Chick-O-Stick cellophane candy wrapper -
